Interdisciplinary approaches that include substantial behavioral care can successfully reduce opioid dosages in patients with chronic pain, but access to such services often is limited. In this study, researchers assessed the effectiveness of a simple negotiated taper without behavioral support. A convenience sample of 110 adult patients (median age, 52, median daily opioid dose, 288 mg morphine equivalents) who were seen in a community pain clinic in California were offered the opportunity to taper their dosage; 82 agreed to participate.
