In the U.S., HIV-positive prison inmates often receive better HIV care than they do after jail release, but no intervention has yet proven to maintain or enhance postrelease viral suppression. In this randomized trial, researchers evaluated the effects of a 12-session, 24-week peer navigation program compared with standard case management in English-speaking, HIV-infected men or transgender women eligible for or receiving antiretroviral therapy while incarcerated in the Los Angeles County Jail. The program, initiated before and continuing after jail release, involved counseling from trained peer navigators and focused on goal-setting and problem-solving regarding barriers to care and adherence.
