Counseling Patients to Minimize UV Radiation Exposure

Background

The USPSTF updated its 2012 statement on preventing skin cancers, both melanoma and nonmelanoma, through behavioral approaches to minimizing ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure (NEJM JW Gen Med Jun 1 2012 and Ann Intern Med 2012; 157:59). The Task Force broadened the age range at which counseling to limit UV radiation exposure might be effective in high-risk patients. The USPSTF found no new evidence to update its 2009 declaration of insufficient evidence to recommend skin self-examination (NEJM JW Gen Med Mar 15 2009 and Ann Intern Med 2009; 150:194).
