The clinical and economic impacts of hospital-onset Clostridium difficile infection (HO-CDI) have continued to worsen. To reduce the rates of HO-CDI, hospitals have implemented bundles of discrete interventions, but these may vary considerably in composition, strength of evidence, and effectiveness.
In a prior study, investigators developed an agent-based computer model to assess the effectiveness of specific interventions within bundles to reduce HO-CDI (Med Decis Making 2015; 35:211). The researchers have now developed a model of HO-CDI interventions in a hypothetical 200-bed acute-care hospital based on the recent literature on HO-CDI epidemiology, diagnosis, and preventive interventions.
