Adrenal nodules are common incidental findings on computed tomography (CT); in a nontrivial minority of cases, nodules are bilateral. In this retrospective study from a single U.S. institution, researchers identified 161 patients with no history of malignancy who had incidental bilateral adrenal masses on CT and at least 2 years of follow-up. The goal was to determine the proportion of cases in which the nodules were malignant.
Of 322 nodules (mean diameter, 1.8 cm), 75 were considered to be benign based on standard criteria on index CTs. Another 74 were considered to be benign by additional adrenal-protocol imaging (by CT or magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]).
