Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) commonly cause infections in children, including epidemic pharyngoconjunctival fever. In adults, HAdVs, particularly types 4 and 7, have caused respiratory infections with considerable morbidity in closed populations, such as in military recruit camps.
A recent outbreak occurred during late 2016 and early 2017 in a New Jersey substance abuse treatment center and involved 59 patients and 20 staff members. Primary symptoms included fever and cough. Four of the 79 probable cases were hospitalized, and 3 (4%) died. In the patients who died, multifocal pneumonia was seen on radiography, and acute respiratory distress syndrome ensued.
