To determine to what extent tetrahydrocannabinol-9 (THC) from currently available commercialized cannabis products is found in breast milk, investigators conducted a small pharmacokinetic study. They anonymously recruited 8 women from the Denver area who met the following criteria: exclusively breast-feeding; infant born at ≥37 weeks gestation; 1 to 6 months postpartum; regularly smoked cannabis; not using oral cannabis, other drugs, or herbal products. The mothers were instructed to go to a preselected cannabis dispensary to purchase preweighed 0.1-g samples of cannabis (THC content 23.2%).
