A previous European study demonstrated very good outcomes among patients undergoing early liver transplantation (LT) for severe alcoholic hepatitis (SAH). There have been few follow-up studies to confirm these findings.
This retrospective study examined outcomes in consecutive patients with a clinical diagnosis of SAH, defined as a Maddrey's criteria ≥32 and no prior history of liver disease or previous episodes of AH. They underwent LT between 2006 and 2017 at 12 U.S. centers, prior to meeting the typical 6 months' abstinence criteria for transplantation. Primary outcomes were survival and alcohol use post-LT.
