Although rapid response teams (RRTs) improve outcomes in hospitalized patients (NEJM JW Gen Med Nov 15 2016 and J Hosp Med 2016; 11:438) due to early interventions and transfer to more-intensive care settings, we don't know what happens to patients who remain in the same clinical setting after RRT activation. Investigators evaluated nearly 1000 consecutive RRT activations in patients at two large teaching hospitals during 20 months; they excluded patients who were transferred to a higher level of care (50%) and those who died or were sent to hospice (2%) following rapid responses.
