The conventional wisdom that early treatment of psychiatric disorders produces better outcomes has not been extensively studied empirically in psychotic disorders. These researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 10 randomized trials of early intervention services (EIS) compared with treatment as usual (TAU) during a first or early-phase episode of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, schizophreniform disorder, delusional disorder, or psychosis not otherwise specified in 2176 patients (mean age, 28; mean duration of untreated psychosis, 80 weeks).
