Colorectal cancer (CRC) has been associated with intestinal microbial dysbiosis and with bacteremia involving specific microbial groups such as Streptococcus bovis. In a retrospective study in Hong Kong, investigators compared the incidence of CRC between over 13,000 patients with bacteremia and age-, sex-, and comorbidity-matched controls without bacteremia.
Bacterial species associated with CRC were Bacteroides fragilis (adjusted hazard ratio, 3.9), Fusobacterium nucleatum (HR, 6.9), Clostridium septicum (HR, 17.1), Clostridium perfringens (HR, 2.3), and Gemella morbillorum (HR, 15.2).
