Mobile phone interventions improve self-management in patients with diabetes. In this trial, investigators in New Zealand randomized 366 people (age, ≥16) with type 1 or 2 diabetes and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) ≥8% to receive a text message–based intervention plus usual care or usual care alone.
The intervention group received individually tailored, automatically delivered series of text messages (providing information, support and motivation, and reminders about elements of self-care and healthy behaviors) and was prompted to reply with results of blood glucose tests.
