Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PcP) is a life-threatening pulmonary infection that can affect severely immunocompromised patients. Historically, PcP has been the most common AIDS-defining illness among HIV-positive patients, but more recently, most PcP-cases are associated with other immunocompromising conditions. Although some evidence supports early use of adjunctive corticosteroids for PcP in HIV-infected individuals, whether adjunctive corticosteroids are also helpful for PCP in HIV-negative, immunocompromised patients is unclear.
