Smoking cessation programs are common components of corporate “wellness” efforts. Some programs offer education alone, but most sweeten the pot with free cessation medications or cash rewards. Little is known about the relative efficacy of these measures.
About 6000 smokers, working for 54 corporate clients of a single “wellness” company, were automatically enrolled into a randomized cessation trial (only 125 smokers actively opted out). The participants were notified by mail or e-mail that they were entitled to one of the following:
Usual care, consisting of smoking cessation education alone
Free medications (nicotine replacement agents, bupropion, or varenicline), with free e-cigarettes for those in whom medication options failed
Free e-cigar…
