Risks for hospitalization and death from influenza are greatest among older individuals and those with immune suppression. Can the use of the high-dose inactivated trivalent vaccine (HD), which contains four times the hemagglutinin antigen than standard-dose influenza vaccine (SD) mitigate this risk? Prior comparisons have provided inconsistent results. Now, two new studies address this question again.
The first study, a single-center, randomized, double-blind trial, involved 161 adult solid organ transplant recipients. Of these patients, 84 received HD and 77 received SD influenza immunization. The primary outcome was vaccine immunogenicity based on pre- and 4-week postvaccine antibody titer.
