Previous research identified two types of bipolar depression: One characterized by behavioral inhibition and emotional hyporeactivity and the other by behavioral activation and emotional hyperreactivity (defined by the magnitude of emotional change from baseline in response to emotion-eliciting stimuli). In remitted bipolar patients, emotional reactivity has also been associated with increased inflammatory markers. To further study clinical correlates of emotional hyperreactivity, investigators recruited 635 patients with bipolar I or II disorder who had had no major mood episode within 3 months.
