The FDA has approved the first drug in its class, erenumab-aooe (marketed as Aimovig), to prevent migraine. Adults self-administer the injections once a month. Erenumab, a human monoclonal antibody, works by inhibiting calcitonin gene-related peptide, which is involved in migraine-specific pain pathways.
In three trials of about 2000 patients, those treated with erenumab consistently had one to two fewer migraine days a month than those given placebo. Injection site reactions and constipation were the most common side effects.
