Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is common in prison populations and has been associated with decreased viral suppression rates in HIV+ persons. Extended-release naltrexone (XR-NTX) has been shown to delay and reduce alcohol consumption, including for HIV+ prisoners released to the community (Drug Alcohol Depend 2017; 174:158).
Now, investigators have conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the effect of XR-NTX on viral suppression in 100 HIV+ prisoners with AUD who were released from the Connecticut Department of Corrections from 2010 through 2016. Participants were randomized 2:1 to received six monthly injections of XR-NTX or placebo starting at prison release.
