Diminishing Adherence to Regular Screening Mammography in Breast Cancer Survivors

Among privately insured U.S. survivors, likelihood of routine screening declined with time since diagnosis.

Several guidelines (e.g., American Society of Clinical Oncology) recommend annual screening mammography beginning 1 year after the imaging that resulted in a cancer diagnosis; but data are limited regarding actual adherence. Investigators used U.S. claims data to assess screening mammography rates among insured women with diagnoses of nonmetastatic breast cancer from 2005 through 2015.

Among some 27,000 women (mean age, 61; 74% white, 12% black, 6% Hispanic, and 3% Asian; median follow-up, 2.9 years), 85% to 87% underwent screening mammography during the first 3 years of follow-up, with these overall proportions falling to 80% at 5 years.
