The current pertussis vaccine for children aged 2 months to 7 years, diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis (DTaP), was introduced in the 1990s and preceded by the whole-cell pertussis vaccine, DTwP. (Tdap vaccine for older children, adolescents, and adults was introduced in 2005). DTaP vaccines were developed in response to the perceived high rates of adverse side effects from DTwP vaccines and completely replaced the latter in 1997.
In the current study, researchers reviewed adverse events after DTaP vaccine administration occurring in the United States between 1991 and 2016. Data came from a passive reporting system on postvaccination adverse events. The following findings were noted from over 50,000 reports reviewed:
