Like other personality disorders, borderline personality disorder (BPD) has been understood to be a trait, rather than state, disorder and therefore to be generally unremitting and intractable. Recent large, longitudinal studies have challenged this perception, with as much as >90% of patients shown to remit over 10 years. Theories now suggest that BPD has both stable and dynamic elements, but the relative proportion has not been tested. These researchers assessed 668 individuals diagnosed with personality disorder, depression, or both for childhood maltreatment (abuse, neglect, witnessing violence), the presence of the nine BPD diagnostic criteria, and personality traits (the Five Factor Model [FFM]).
