Very-Low-Volume Bowel Preparation for Colonoscopy

A new 1-liter prep outperforms standard low-volume options.

The new 1-L polyethylene glycol (PEG) bowel preparation for colonoscopy, NER1006 (marketed as Plenvu), was compared with standard low-volume solutions in three industry-funded, phase III trials. The results of one trial were previously reported (NEJM JW Gastroenterol Oct 2017 and Gastrointest Endosc 2018; 87:677). Investigators in Europe now report the results of the other two trials.

In one study involving over 800 participants, evening/morning split-dose and morning-only NER1006 regimens were each noninferior to 2-L PEG-plus-ascorbate. In per-protocol analyses, split-dose NER1006 achieved a higher overall cleansing success rate (97% vs. 92%), and both regimens had higher rates of high-quality right-colon cleansing (32% [split-dose] and 34%…
