Screening for cancer seems like a good idea — after all, who wouldn't want to find any type of cancer (for example, cervical, breast, or colon cancer) when it can be most effectively treated and cured? Screening means looking for cancer before any symptoms appear.
Examples of screening tests are mammograms for breast cancer, Pap smears and human papillomavirus (HPV) tests for cervical cancer, and colonoscopies for colon cancer. Screening works best during the period of precancerous changes (abnormal cells or tissue that are not cancer but could become cancer) or very early cancer that has not yet caused serious damage or spread to other body organs.
