During the past decade, research has suggested that tight glycemic control is unlikely to benefit older people with longstanding type 2 diabetes and is associated with excess risk for hypoglycemia. In this study, U.S. researchers used a “Diabetes Collaborative Registry” to examine the intensity of glycemic control in 43,000 type 2 diabetic patients (age, ≥75) from 2014 through 2016.
About 28% of patients had diet-controlled diabetes, defined as glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) <7% with no medications. Among the remaining patients, these findings were noted:
26% had tight control (HbA1c, <7%) and were taking at least one agent associated with high risk for hypoglycemia (i.e., insulin, sulfonylurea, or meglitinide).
