A quadrivalent conjugate meningococcal vaccine that covers serotypes A, C, W, and Y is recommended for children with high-risk conditions such as splenic dysfunction and complement deficiency starting at age 2 years. However, a newer vaccine for meningococcal B disease is not currently recommended in these children.
In an open-label study, researchers tested the efficacy of the meningococcal B vaccine (Bexsero) given in two doses two months apart to children aged 2 to 17 years (112 with splenic dysfunction or asplenia, 40 with terminal complement deficiency, and 87 healthy controls).
