You might have noted a recent advertising blitz for a gout drug called Duzallo on network television and in newspapers. Duzallo is a recently FDA-approved combination of lesinurad (which increases uric acid excretion) and allopurinol (which decreases urate production).
To examine the effectiveness of this combination, industry-funded researchers conducted two similar randomized trials (one U.S., the other international) that each involved about 600 patients with gout, creatinine clearance ≥30 mL/minute, and uric acid levels >6.0 mg/dL while taking allopurinol (mean dose, ≈300 mg daily).
