Identifying persons with primary HIV infection can importantly affect transmission networks, an area of high interest for vaccine and eradication efforts. Investigators at the University of Washington have been focused on the earliest stages of infection since 1992. To date, 360 subjects have been enrolled in their observational cohort, of whom 123 with documented very early HIV infection (defined as having enzyme immunoassay (EIA)–negative/RNA-positive results or symptoms consistent with primary infection — Fiebig stages I or II) were referred for further evaluation.
