Quetiapine — approved for several mood and psychotic conditions and often used off-label for anxiety and insomnia symptoms — is the most commonly prescribed atypical antipsychotic medication among women of childbearing age. These investigators analyzed prospective data from an industry-supported, national pregnancy registry enrolling women with histories of psychiatric illness to examine rates of major congenital malformations in 155 infants of women who received quetiapine (but no other atypical antipsychotics) during the first trimester of pregnancy and 205 offspring of women with no exposure to these medications.
