Previous studies have reported a high prevalence of HIV among black transgender women (BTW) in the U.S., but data are lacking regarding the continuum of HIV care for this risk group. To fill this knowledge gap, investigators recruited BTW at black pride events in six U.S. cities from 2014 through 2017. Volunteers completed a behavioral survey and were provided onsite HIV testing.
Among 422 BTW who completed the survey, 45% were HIV-positive. Of those, 51.4% were undiagnosed at the time of the survey, and only 24.5% reported viral suppression.
