Medical scribes have been shown to increase provider productivity and satisfaction in emergency department (ED) and primary care settings (NEJM JW Emerg Med Jul 2010 and Acad Emerg Med 2010; 17:490; NEJM JW Gen Med Oct 15 2016 and J Gen Intern Med 2016; 31:990). However, it is unclear whether this holds true in pediatric EDs, which typically have lower patient volumes and acuities than their adult counterparts.
In a before and after observational study, researchers assessed the effects of implementing a scribe program for physicians and nurse practitioners at a 12-bed academic pediatric ED. The researchers measured several provider efficiency metrics as well as parent, nurse, and provider satisfaction.
