Clinicians, parents, teachers, and even some adolescents are concerned about the possibly deleterious effects on adolescents of watching pornography. In a first-of-its-kind prospective study, investigators examined this question in a 1-year investigation of Croatian high school sophomores (mean age at enrollment, 16).
Two panels were involved: 455 students surveyed via the Internet (girls, 73%) and 858 students surveyed in classrooms (girls, 62%). Collected data included demographics, pornography use, academic achievement, religiosity, depression, anxiety, impulsiveness, adverse family environment, self-esteem, and subjective well-being. Some degree of pornography use was reported by >50% of the students.
