For children with special healthcare needs, natural disasters can be particularly hazardous. Children relying on home parenteral nutrition, for instance, cannot tolerate a prolonged loss of electricity, and their families must have a plan in place to secure backup power.
Researchers performed and evaluated a disaster-preparedness intervention for 31 families of children requiring home parenteral nutrition who were seen in an intestinal rehabilitation clinic. At a routine visit, clinic staff delivered individualized advice, provided a disaster survival toolkit, and administered a six-question survey on disaster preparedness, which was repeated by phone at 2 months and 4 months postvisit.
