Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) plays a key role in a range of clinical decisions in patients with heart disease. We generally assume that the several ways we have of measuring LVEF provide concordant information. Studies of clinical practice, however, have indicated much interobserver and intraobserver variability in the interpretation of these measurements. To learn whether the different modalities, when used by research core laboratories, produce similar estimates, investigators made use of LVEF measurements in a clinical trial that enrolled people with coronary artery disease and left ventricular dysfunction.
