Relapses in immune thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (iTTP) usually occur when levels of ADAMTS13 are <10% and antibody titers are elevated. Rituximab is often included with therapeutic plasma exchange for the treatment of patients with acute iTTP, but whether giving the agent prophylactically will prevent relapses in patients with low ADAMTS13 levels remains unclear.
To evaluate the value of preemptive rituximab in this setting, investigators examined French registry data on 92 patients in remission after an acute episode of iTTP. All patients were followed for at least 1 year and had ADAMTS13 measurements every 3 months.
