An important perioperative complication of carotid revascularization — stroke — is precisely what the procedure is supposed to prevent in the long term. In this study, researchers used a vascular surgery registry (Vascular Quality Initiative) with data from ≥400 hospitals in 18 U.S. geographic regions to examine variability in perioperative complication rates for carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery stenting (CAS) during 2009 through 2016. About 66,000 patients underwent CEA (69% for asymptomatic stenosis), and about 12,000 underwent CAS (39% for asymptomatic stenosis).
In asymptomatic patients, risk-adjusted rates of perioperative stroke or death across the 18 regions ranged from roughly 1% to 3% for CEA and about 1% to 5% for CA…
