The oft-quoted claim that half of all physicians suffer from burnout has raised national concerns about widespread physician misery, but a full understanding of burnout, and its causes and consequences, is unclear. Investigators addressed this issue in a systematic review and a new prospective study.
A systematic review of 182 studies of burnout involved 110,000 physicians from 45 countries. Most studies employed some version of the 22-question Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI); however, numerous definitions of burnout were used, with different MBI cut-off scores, subscales, and individual items from the MBI or other instruments.
