Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is an opioid withdrawal syndrome occurring in the infant after delivery and is associated with prolonged infant hospitalizations. Along with OUD, rates of NAS are rising. Pregnant women with OUD often take additional medications to address other psychiatric disorders. To learn about the effects of these other medications, researchers retrospectively studied NAS outcomes in infants of 744 opioid-dependent mothers receiving opioid replacement therapy (54% were on 1 additional psychiatric medication, and 32% were on polypharmacy).
