Candida auris is a newly emergent multidrug-resistant pathogen that has been associated with multiple intensive care unit (ICU) outbreaks worldwide. Researchers at a United Kingdom medical center now report on the epidemiologic features of a 2.5-year outbreak in a 16-bed neurosciences ICU.
In October 2016, a review determined that beginning in February 2015, 9 patients were infected or colonized with C. auris, 8 of whom had been in the neurosciences ICU. A subsequent investigation that included routine surveillance cultures identified 61 further patients, with 94% of cases admitted the ICU prior to diagnosis.
