Up to 50% of patients with acute deep venous thrombosis (DVT) experience post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS), which ranges in severity from pain and swelling to skin pigmentation and ulceration. However, current guidelines do not recommend any specific measures to prevent PTS.
To determine whether the application of compression stockings or bandages during the acute phase of DVT would reduce subsequent development of PTS, investigators from the Netherlands conducted a nonrandomized trial involving 592 patients with proximal DVT of the leg. Of these patients, 62.3% received compression with multilayer bandaging, 25.5% received compression with stockings, and 12.2% received no compression.
