With the aging of the population in Western nations, a substantial increase is expected in the burden of stroke and dementia. Quantified risks according to sex would be valuable from a public health standpoint.
These authors evaluated participants in the Rotterdam study from 1990 to January 1, 2016. At baseline, 12,102 participants age ≥45 years were free from stroke, dementia, and parkinsonism (57.7% women; mean age, 64.4 years; 54% with hypertension; 9% with type 2 diabetes; 5% with atrial fibrillation). During follow-up, participants were screened for these conditions every 4 years via exams and interviews. In addition, the authors monitored computerized records of general practitioners for these three conditions.
