Machine learning is a statistical method that “learns” to improve performance as analysis proceeds and that controls for distracting data (e.g., data from different sites). In an international, prospective study, researchers examined the accuracy of machine learning based on baseline structural MRI findings and social and role functioning in predicting 1-year functional outcomes in 116 individuals (mean age, 24) at clinical high risk for developing a psychotic disorder (CHR) and 120 patients (mean age, 26) with recent-onset depression (ROD).
