Patients with refractory vomiting and several other less-specific symptoms are often diagnosed with gastroparesis based on clinical presentation and abnormal gastric emptying studies. Gastric electrical stimulation (GES) was developed as a method of gastroparesis symptom control almost 20 years ago, however, long-term data on patient outcomes are lacking.
Investigators retrospectively examined data from 119 patients who underwent GES for medically refractory gastroparesis at two academic centers. Data on pre- and post-GES symptom severity were collected from one quarter of patients. Mean follow-up was 39 months (diabetic gastroparesis group) to 45 months (idiopathic gastroparesis group).
