Stage 1 Hypertension Raises Risk for Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy

Revised definition of stage 1 hypertension adds more women to this at-risk population.

The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) recently redefined stage 1 hypertension as systolic blood pressure (BP) 130 to 139 mm Hg or diastolic BP 80 to 89 mm Hg (J Am Coll Cardiol 2017 Nov 13; [e-pub]). To assess outcomes among pregnant women with lower-range stage 1 hypertension by the new guidelines, investigators conducted a secondary analysis of a placebo-controlled, randomized trial of low-dose aspirin for prevention of preeclampsia. Among 2947 women with singleton pregnancies at 13 to 25 weeks' gestation, 164 (5.6%) had systolic BP of 130 to 135 mm Hg or diastolic BP of 80 to 85 mm Hg at study entry.
