Retaining patients in treatment for opioid use disorder is challenging, with high drop-out rates across treatment modalities. These investigators conducted a pragmatic, randomized, parallel-group, open-label, 24-week comparison of oral and injected extended-release (XR) naltrexone.
Sixty patients who had completed inpatient, medication-assisted opioid detoxification and had transitioned to oral naltrexone 50 mg/day either continued oral medication or received monthly naltrexone XR injections (380 mg). (Absent a significant other who could monitor ingestion, patients continued clinic-based administration).
