Endoscopists should be familiar with polyp features (size, location, morphology, and surface features) that are predictive of submucosal invasion in order to determine whether endoscopic or surgical resection is appropriate. Polyps that are evaluated as type 3, according to the Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) International Colorectal Endoscopic (NICE) classification system, are indicative of adenocarcinomas with deep invasion. However, previous studies assessing NICE type 3 accuracy to predict deep submucosal invasion were conducted ex vivo and using magnification, which is not routinely available or done in the West.
