Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is effective for patients with remitted or current depression; preliminary work shows its promise for chronic, treatment-resistant depression. Unlike previous MBCT studies, these researchers used a definition for treatment resistance that incorporated current depression treatment guidelines on psychological interventions — previous pharmacotherapy for ≥4 weeks and either cognitive-behavioral therapy or interpersonal psychotherapy for ≥10 sessions. The 106 participants had moderate-to-severe depression and a current depressive episode for ≥12 months and were randomized to treatment as usual alone or with manual-based MBCT.
