Midurethral mesh sling (MUMS) placement is a simple surgical procedure that effectively manages stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in 75% of women (NEJM JW Womens Health Sep 2010 and N Engl J Med 2010; 362:2066). However, concern has been raised about the safety of inserting synthetic mesh into the body. To assess reoperation rates following placement of a MUMS, investigators in England used an administrative hospital database in a retrospective study of 95,057 women with SUI who had the operation (median follow-up, 5.5 years).
