How Common Is Reoperation After Midurethral Mesh Sling Placement?

About 1 in 15 women undergo additional surgery within 9 years, often to remove some or all of the sling.

Midurethral mesh sling (MUMS) placement is a simple surgical procedure that effectively manages stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in 75% of women (NEJM JW Womens Health Sep 2010 and N Engl J Med 2010; 362:2066). However, concern has been raised about the safety of inserting synthetic mesh into the body. To assess reoperation rates following placement of a MUMS, investigators in England used an administrative hospital database in a retrospective study of 95,057 women with SUI who had the operation (median follow-up, 5.5 years).

At 1, 5, and 9 years after the initial MUMS procedure, rates of partial or complete sling removal were 1.4%, 2.7%, and 3.3%, respectively. Most reoperation procedures involved only partial removal of the sling, and in …
