Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) recently has surpassed Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) in annual number of U.S. bariatric procedures; adjustable gastric banding (AGB) lags far behind the other two. To examine efficacy and safety of these procedures, researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study, with propensity-score analysis, using electronic health record data from >40 healthcare systems. Outcomes were compared in >46,000 patients who underwent one of three types of bariatric surgical procedures: ≈25,000 RYGB, ≈19,000 SG, and ≈2500 AGB. Adverse events were defined as death, reoperation, percutaneous or endoscopic intervention, venous thromboembolism, or failure to be discharged from the hospital within 30 days.
