Somatoform disorders have a worldwide prevalence of 3% and are associated with poor functioning and excessive health-resource utilization. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) effectively addresses maladaptive cognitions, behaviors, and precipitating and perpetuating factors. These researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 15 randomized, controlled trials of CBT versus usual or enhanced care in 1671 adults with somatoform disorder diagnoses or medically unexplained physical symptoms.
