Measles-Vectored Chikungunya Virus Vaccine Safe and Immunogenic in Phase 2 Trial

The vaccine was immunogenic independent of preexisting measles immunity but probably will require two doses.

Chikungunya virus continues to cause large outbreaks; about half of the global population lives in areas at risk for transmission and locally transmitted infections have also occurred in Europe and the U.S. Although not usually fatal, the infection is associated with significant morbidity, and an effective vaccine would be of great value.

Investigators now report results of an industry-sponsored, phase 2, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with one of the candidate vaccines (NEJM JW Infect Dis Apr 2015 and Lancet Infect Dis 2015; 15:519).
